On February 10, 2016, the Corporation for Supportive Housing came to Michigan to hold a special training on fair housing for homeless service providers. Very few persons and organizations are aware that the Fair Housing Amendments Act of 1988 and the Michigan statutes - namely the Elliott-Larsen Civil Rights Act and the Persons With Disabilities Civil Rights Act - apply to Homeless Shelters. The evidence from the housing discrimination complaints filed with FHCMD by home seekers, from the "testing" conducted by the FHCMD, and from the statements provided by many housing providers who support fair housing laws and are willing to step forward to help expose violations of those laws, demonstrates that practices of unlawful housing discrimination continue and the services of FHCMD are needed.
