Please join us for fair housing tester training!
The Fair Housing Center of Metropolitan Detroit is a non-profit civil rights organization dedicated to promoting equal opportunity in housing in Detroit and throughout the surrounding Detroit Tri-Counties of Wayne, Oakland, and Macomb.
The Fair Housing Center is dedicated to the eliminating housing discrimination, promoting open, accessible, and inclusive communities, and strengthening enforcement of fair housing laws. The Center provides counseling, investigative assistance (testing), and legal referrals to assist victims of housing discrimination, conducts pro-active investigations to identify and challenge discriminatory housing practices, and advocates policies that reduce segregation and poverty concentration throughout the region. The Center works to expand housing choice and increase opportunities for all populations, including groups that have been historically marginalized, discriminated against, or excluded.
The Fair Housing Center recruits individuals to work as part-time testers. Fair housing laws protect everyone from unlawful housing discrimination. For this reason, the Fair Housing Center developed a large and diverse pool of trained and experienced testers who can be utilized in many types of fair housing testing investigations. To promote equitable housing, the Fair Housing Center uses testing to investigate housing practices and aid with the enforcement of federal, state, and local fair housing laws.
We had a great time at this year’s 2025 Fair Housing Awareness Bikeathon. Registrations increased from 55 in 2022 (our first bikeathon), to 69 in 2023, 101 in 2024, and 146 in this year’s 2025 Bikeathon. Our Board chair, Karlynne Tucker-Scaggs, founded the Bikeathon as a reflection of her dual labor of love for bicycling and fair housing. Please take a moment to view a short, 4-minute video of the bikeathon.
We appreciate the support of Mayor Kenson Siver, Chief of Police Elvin Barren, and their hardworking team for all of their support and participation in the Bikeathon. They could not have made our Board, our staff, and all of our participants more welcome. You can see this in the above link to the pictures from the Bikeathon.
This is not an isolated display of the City of Southfield’s commitment to fair housing. The City of Southfield has supported our fair housing mission for years with sub-CDBG grants.
Last, but certainly not least, we wish to thank again all of the generous sponsors of this year’s Bikeathon. The link at the top takes you to the list of sponsors.
Please mark your calendars each year for the last Saturday in April for our Fair Housing Awareness Bikeathon.
