Using the price or location of a home to determine broker fees and what services are available to prospective buyers or sellers can result in real estate sales discrimination. Policies based on the list price or location might appear neutral on their face, but they have an unnecessary #DisparateImpact on communities of color. Companies can take the following steps to try to address the issue:
- Establish more real estate offices in communities of color;
- Serve and respect neighbors of color;
- Cultivate partnerships with real estate trade organizations such as the National Association of Real Estate Brokers (NAREB), the National Association of Hispanic Real Estate Professionals (NAHREP), and the Asian Real Estate Association of America (AAREA); and
- Review internal company policies, analyze fair housing and civil rights implications, and change policies where there may be discriminatory.
